Art Deco Club Chair
Art Deco Club Chair
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
As a fine example of a very rare and decorative antique Art Deco Club Chair, this type of club chair evokes the glamour and comfort of days gone by. A generous and comfortable chair, it has an exposed wood arm that continues to form the front feet.
Crafted of solid hardwood, this chair has recently been painstakingly restored, refurbished and reupholstered with a beautiful cinnamon/sunny orange toned double woven fabric (70% viscose and 30% polyester), suitably called, “jungle”. The luster of wood was restored with a professional French hand polish. It is very heavy to lift which is always a sign of authenticity and quality!

BACKSTORY:
Also called simply Deco, Art Deco is short for “Arts Décoratifs”. Concerned with decorative arts and architecture and originating in Paris in the 1920s, it was the French response to the threat of the German Biedermeier style that was growing in popularity – simple and clean-lined. A collection of several different styles, Art Deco was sometimes contradictory, albeit with aspirations of being modern. It encompassed bold geometric forms of Cubism; bright colours of Fauvism; craftsmanship of Louis Philippe I and Louis XVI period furniture; exotic styles of Asia, ancient Egypt and Mayan art.
It developed into a major style in Western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. Its intention was to create a sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication. With great simplicity, the Art Deco era produced armchairs, like this one here, with clean, flexible lines, in contrast to the Art Nouveau style of the 1910s. One of the first truly international styles, Art Deco’s dominance ended with the beginning of World War II giving way to the more strictly functional and unadorned styles of modernism and the International Style of architecture.
