GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Approximately 40-year-old this “graffi” long stool from Bamenda is in wonderful antique condition for its age. From the Northwest region of Cameroon, it has incorporated in it genuine African cowries, nail studs and leather, which together with its unusual shape,  take it to another dimension.

Due to the antique/vintage nature of our items, we encourage our buyers to please examine photos closely and carefully read the description and measurements of the items to avoid any disappointments. There might be what seem to be some slight imperfections; most likely they will show flaws consistent with ware, ages, and use, which only add character and charm to the items. Each item is described and photographed as accurately as possible.

BACKSTORY:
This stool, from the west/northwest region (Bamileke/Graffi) of Cameroon, could have seated one to two and would have been used in the villages by a family. It was more usual to have single seated stools. Considered a “secondary antique” as it has certain characteristics resulting from foreign influence to the indigenous culture. It is embellished with imported decorative studs, as well as the more traditional embellishment with cowries and leather. It is likely that it was a bit special and not just used for something as mundane as house chores or for someone as traditionally “less central” as a wife, mother and daughter. Traditionally, the father, head of the family, would chair meetings and could have had such an honored seat. Judging from its good condition, it was a cherished and appreciated piece.
